One of the most prevalent concerns in our faith communities right now is the rise of Christian nationalism, a weaponized religious movement that seeks to declare that Christianity is intrinsically aligned with American values and that the United States was both founded as and should be a Christian nation. More than 1/3 of Americans would identify as “Christian adherents or sympathizers” based on attitudes and actions, per data from the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI.) This session explores the hidden attitudes that lead us toward our own values alignment with Christian nationalism and how we might interrogate this threat within our communities. Participants will also consider the role of faith communities in naming and being accountable to counter Christian nationalism.
This webinar will be led by Dr. J. Cody Nielsen, Assistant Professor of Higher Education and Executive Director of Convergence Strategies.
