You get a new booster, and you get a new booster

You get a new booster, and you get a new booster

You all get new boosters!

Spoiler alert: the CDC is recommending basically everybody get a COVID booster this fall. That’s a good thing! There’s also a program to pay for shots for people with no or inadequate health insurance. That’s an even better thing!

With the highlights out of the way, let’s get into the weeds a little. As anticipated, the FDA has approved a new round of booster vaccines against COVID. At least, they’ve endorsed two of the three possibilities: Moderna and Pfizer. Booster doses of those two vaccines could be available as early as the end of this week.

However, the FDA did not give the green light to Novavax, the only non-mRNA vaccine available in the U.S. That’s been held up for undisclosed reasons, though it’s expected to be available before too long.

This is great news, but what does it mean for you, and for the church? To answer that, we have to look at who can get the shots, and who should get the shots.

So, uh, let’s do that?

What to do?

What to do?

The confusion isn’t all BA.2.86’s fault Looks like we’re back to being a COVID-focused newsletter for a little while. This might last a week, or it might be longer. But we’ve got news to share, and you deserve to hear it! Let’s talk about confusion. As mentioned last week, COVID levels are rising in Wisconsin. It’s increasing in wastewater, it’s increasing in…

10 things to think about when air quality is this bad

You may have noticed (how could you not?) the smoky haze covering much of Wisconsin in the last few weeks. Originating with wild fires in northern Québec, it makes for beautiful sunsets and terrible breathing.

Airnow.gov predicts that the pollution will moderate on Thursday, at least in my area. But we will almost certainly face this situation again. With climate change comes more wildfires. Friends on the West Coast will testify to that fact.

It will be good to be prepared, then. The EPA provides some background information and a handy chart of things to think about. I’ve put that in a shareable form here and made a list of suggestions for churches below.

Host a Digital Equity Outreach Listening Session in Your Church Remember in March 2020 when churches had to become online ministries almost overnight? Three years later, we have regathered in physical space, but the digital ministries started during the COVID pandemic continue in most congregations. Services are broadcast online. Pastors share stories of serving as a help desk for church…

May is Mental Health Awareness month

May is Mental Health Awareness month

May is Mental Health Awareness month

Yes, this relates to COVID

Let’s kick off this week with a couple of basically-related items, and one general announcement:

  1. Hey, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy agrees with me on loneliness! Thanks for listening, Dr. Murthy!1
  2. If you didn’t see my piece on suicide in this week’s WCC eNews, you might want to give it a read. It adds more detail on one aspect of the subject of mental health that I don’t have space to flesh out here. It’s worth reading, I promise.
  3. This newsletter is too long newsletter as it is, and this might make it even too longer. I’ve added a new section at the bottom with assorted, general health-related items. I have a lot of information crossing my desk, as you might guess. A lot of it is worthy, but not quite enough for an entire newsletter column. Hence the list. You can also find much of the same information on the CHP Facebook page.

Conversation as a path to health

We recently wrapped up our COVID Community Solutions grant. That was the second of our Vaccination Community Outreach projects. This grant was led by the very able Rev. Teresa Thomas-Boyd. Pastor Teresa, as everyone calls her, is a master not just of ministry, but of community organizing. We already miss her presence on staff.
