Rev. Dr. Carter Heyward is an American feminist theologian and priest in the Episcopal Church, the province of the worldwide Anglican Communion in the United States. In 1974, she was one of the Philadelphia Eleven, eleven women whose ordinations eventually paved the way for the recognition of women as priests in the Episcopal Church in 1976. As a professor, theologian, activist, and writer, Dr. Heyward has been a pioneer in the areas of feminist liberation theology and the theology of sexuality. She has written 18 books, the latest of which is The Seven Deadly Sins of White Christian Nationalism: A Call to Action.

In this conversation, hosted by the Clergy Emergency League and the Wisconsin Council of Churches, we will talk with Dr. Heyward about the rise of white Christian Nationalism, the challenges facing women in ministry, and the increasing threats to the rights of women, LGBTQIA+, and historically marginalized communities. What is the church’s role in fighting christofascism? What can clergy and congregations do to resist authoritarianism that is based on white savagery and toxic masculinity? And how can churches help protect and strengthen democracy in the lead-up to the mid-term elections and beyond? This conversation will draw on Dr. Heyward’s decades of expertise as an activist and “holy troublemaker” to inspire clergy and congregations in their ministries of justice.
