Religious Advocacy Groups

The National Council of Churches, Justice and Advocacy Commission, maintains a website at: www.ncccusa.org/about/justicehome.html with extensive materials on eco-justice, women's justice issues, and peace and justice issues.

The Lutheran Office of Public Policy in Wisconsin website at: www.loppw.org contains helpful action alerts, advocacy issues and additional contact information.

The Wisconsin Catholic Conference website: www.wisconsincatholic.com contains bishop's statements, advocacy information and helpful contacts.

2009 Advocacy Day at the Capitol -"People of Faith United for Justice" - held March 10, 2009

Keynoter: Michael Kinnamon, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches.

People of Faith United for Justice was held March 10 as a day-long gathering to learn, discuss, pray and advocate for social and economic justice during these recessionary times. Following a plenary session, keynote address and breakout sessions at Bethel Lutheran Church, an afternoon rally was held at the capitol with the opportunity to meet with legislators.

Priority issues for Advocacy Day included health care reform, treatment instead of prison, public education and nutrition programs, jobs, fair taxes, and the needs of immigrants.

Sponsored by: This event was sponsored by the Wisconsin Council of Churches, Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee, Lutheran Office for Public Policy in Wisconsin, Wisdom and Madison-Area Urban Ministries. This event will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church, Madison, and at the State Capitol.

What Else Can I Do?

Familiarize yourself with issues, pray about them, and discuss them with friends and family.  Take issues to your congregation, attend public meetings, and write letters to the editor.  Consider taking a part in WCC program activities, joining the WCC Peace and Justice Committee or the Stewardship of Public Life Committee.
