2012 Washington Island Forum – “Being Jesus”

  • Putting on Christ: “Exploring the challenge, receiving the commission, and claiming the authority to be Jesus.”
  • Healing: “How healing happens, what it requires, and what it means to restore individuals and communities to wholeness.”
  • Forgiving: “The hardest miracle, and the most difficult. Prayer, conflict and the forgiveness of sin.”
  • Raising the Dead: “How to bring new life out of the grave.”
Presenter: The presenter for the 2012 Forum will be Sara Miles, founder and director of The Food Pantry and Director of Ministry at Saint Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church, San Francisco, CA. She is the author of Jesus Freak: Feeding Healing Raising the Dead and Take This Bread: A Radical Conversion. She is a noted speaker, preacher and workshop leader nationally and her writing has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, and on National Public Radio. “The impulse to share food is basic and ancient, and it’s no wonder the old stories teach that what you give to a stranger you give to God.” (p. 49 Take This Bread, by Sara Miles). Forum Setting: The Forum is a 40 year tradition and is sponsored by the Wisconsin Council of Churches and The Christian Century magazine.Enjoy four and one half days of worship, workshops, discussion, and contemplation in an ecumenical retreat setting on Washington Island, just north of Door County Wisconsin. The week begins with a welcome and opening picnic Monday afternoon. Tuesday through Thursday enjoy morning prayer and workshop sessions with Sara Miles, and optional afternoon discussion groups. Friday begins with a Eucharist, a final workshop and discussion, with departure at noon.
 
Lodging, meals and recreational opportunities are offered by numerous Island establishments. See the Washington Island Chamber of Commerce website for information on Island lodging, restaurants and services www.washingtonislandchamber.com. Registrants will receive a packet of information in early Spring containing an Island brochure, draft Forum schedule, a ferry schedule and other helpful information. Register early to assure a place at the 2012 Forum – seats are limited and may be filled early in the year. It is advised that you also reserve a place of lodging early, and inquire about refunds should your plans change.
  
Registration: The registration fee, including the opening picnic and daily refreshments, is $250 payable at time of registration. Lodging is separate. Your registration fee will be fully refunded prior to May 1st if you need to cancel; a refund minus $75 will be made after that date.

 2013 Forum

We have received confirmation that the presenter for the 2013 Washington Island Forum will be Brian McLaren, extensive author on the changing nature of the church, leader of the emergent church movement, and known for his book, A Generous Orthodoxy. Registration begins in June, 2012 following the 2012 Forum. More on the 2013 Forum.
